If a Student Appears to be Experiencing an Allergic Reaction:

  1. Refer to the student's "Food Allergy Action Plan". Copies of this plan are in the office, the playground backpack, and the child's classroom.
  2. Follow the treatment option recommended on the "Food Allergy Action Plan".
  3. If the student is experiencing difficulty, ask someone else to call 9-1-1 right away.
  4. Administer the Epi-Pen if the plan calls for it, or if the student is having trouble breathing. When in doubt, it is better to give the Epi-Pen than to withhold it.
  5. Bring the Epi-Pen to the student...do not move the student. Physical exertion (such as running to the school office) can make the reaction worse.
  6. Stay with the student at all times. Do not send the student alone to the office.
  7. Contact parents if an Epi-Pen has been administered.

  1. One of the keys to good hand washing is to keep scrubbing for as long as it would take you to sing one verse of "Happy Birthday" slowly.
  2. Hand sanitizer is NOT a substitute for hand washing. It does not remove traces of nuts from hands.
